In the following travel guide, she invites you to discover some of her favorite spots in La Jolla, including recommendations on where to eat and what to do for anyone visiting the area.

Catch the Waves at Windansea Beach
Where: 6800 Neptune Place, La Jolla, CA 92037
The best times to visit: Before the tide gets high or around golden hour.
Windansea Beach in La Jolla might not be an undiscovered gem, but it’s one of those special spots in La Jolla you might miss if you’re not on the lookout. Like many beautiful beaches in Southern California, Windansea is a haven for relaxing, sunbathing, and soaking up the salty sea breeze. But what sets it apart is its picturesque rocky shoreline, breathtaking views, and the charming white steps that lead you down to the sand—right in front of homes lucky enough to call Windansea their backyard. It’s a beloved destination for San Diego locals and surfers alike.
When you stroll along Windansea, you’ll discover the iconic surf shack, a unique landmark that has been standing since the 1950s. Another beach to explore would be Hogan’s Cove. It’s a secret spot for many locals. You can watch a number of TikTok videos on it here.

Lunch at El Pescador Fish Market

Sofia’s order:
Grilled octopus
Calamari Steak
She also recommends the oysters
The La Jolla fish market is a place where many of Sofia’s friends as well as her brother's friends work. If you grew up here, you’re bound to run into someone you know. For this reason, she jokingly suggests that it's not the best choice for a date.
A Sweet Treat at Bobboi
Where: 8008 Girard Ave #150, La Jolla, CA 92037
Sofia’s order:
Affogato with Mediterraneo gelato and two shots of espresso with an extra waffle cone.
For a guilt-free treat, Sofia heads to Bobboi, an Italian gelato cafe nestled in the heart of La Jolla and just a short stroll from the cove. She’s a fan of their affogato and asks for two shots of espresso. "It wakes me up," she laughs.

Sunset at Paradisaea Restaurant
Where: 5680 La Jolla Blvd, San Diego, CA 92037
Sofia’s order:
Hoopoe drink
Bluefin Tuna Crudo
Hokkaido Scallops
Hand-rolled lemon cavatelli
Local Halibut
"They switch up the menu pretty often, but I always order their burger—it’s truly amazing. They use this tomato jam that I’m obsessed with! For appetizers, they usually have some sort of crudo, and depending on the fish, we always order it to try it out," Sofia shares.
Sofia and Paula love Paradisaea for its perfect mix of coastal charm and culinary creativity, making it one of her favorite spots in Bird Rock. "It was exciting to have a nicer restaurant here in La Jolla, especially in Bird Rock (my neighborhood). My mom and I are huge foodies and follow the Michelin Guide, so we were very excited to try it out, and it's definitely become a staple restaurant we try to hit at least once a month," she shares.
Just steps from her home, this Michelin-selected fine dining gem offers a warm, welcoming vibe that captures the laid-back yet sophisticated feel of La Jolla. Whether she’s there for an intimate evening dinner or a sweet treat at Dodo Bird Donuts next door, Sofia admires the blend of high-end dining with the welcoming beauty of the coast.

Where to Stay in La Jolla
Where: 1132 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037
When it comes to accommodations, Sofia finds it challenging to recommend hotels in La Jolla. She notes that while La Valencia is beautiful and close to the water, it’s a bit older and the area is also known for its difficult parking.
If you prefer to skip that hassle, Sofia has glowing reviews for Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe – just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of La Jolla. Make a reservation at the Pony Room for brunch, a favorite of Sofia’s and her mother, Paula. It’s the perfect place to enjoy delicious food, great ambiance, and a chance to see some interesting people.
La Jolla is a special place. As you explore the town and drive along the coastline, listen to "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty. “Every time I listen to it, I think of home,” she concludes.
