Inside A 24-Hour Day Trip to Palm Springs

Palm Springs is iconic for so many reasons.

A novice to the area may overlook it as just another desert, but it’s so much more than that. Beyond its reputation as a popular getaway and festival destination, Palm Springs is a glamorous oasis steeped in rich history. Dating back to the days of Frank Sinatra, Elvis and the Kennedys, this desert hideaway, just two hours traveling from San Diego or Los Angeles, was designed to instantly make you feel you’ve stepped into another world – one of luxury, escapism, and endless possibilities. It doesn’t get the name “Hollywood’s Playground” for no reason. Fast forward to today, and Palm Springs upholds its legacy as a place where people come to recharge, indulge, and explore.

Residents of the area applaud the strong sense of community in Palm Springs, the world-class dining, mid-century modern architecture, and history that comes with it being such an iconic landmark. Without a doubt, Palm Springs is brimming with hidden gems. If you're craving an escape — even if just for a day — here’s a glimpse of what that could look like. Enter your 24-hour day trip to Palm Springs guide, complete with some insider tips I’ve picked up along the way.

Palm Springs vs. Palm Desert

Don’t confuse Palm Springs with Palm Desert. Admittedly, even I found myself getting them mixed up. Both cities are close neighbors, about a 20-minute drive apart and they’re both considered part of the Coachella Valley.

Palm Springs, located north of Palm Desert, has an undeniably cool, retro vibe that earns it the title "the heart of the Coachella Valley." It’s home to a vibrant arts and culture scene.

Palm Desert is quieter and more suburban, offering a contemporary and relaxed feel. You’ll find upscale shopping and restaurants in Palm Desert along with an abundance of golf courses and spas. It’s the ultimate luxurious spot.

When is the best time to visit Palm Springs?

The best time to visit Palm Springs is in the winter. Here are some outfit essentials for a Palm Springs wardrobe. As a desert, the winter months provide ideal weather and is also peak season, meaning Palm Springs is lively and full of activity. On the other hand, summers can be sweltering, and during these months it’s much quieter, offering a more secluded experience. When traveling to Palm Springs in the summer, I recommend indulging in indoor activities, such as the Palm Springs Museum or treating yourself at The Spa at Sec-heOpens a new window which is known for its stunning pools. Be sure to use this as an opportunity to master your poolside style and bring a few ViX swimwear pieces and vacation cover-ups with you! A Palm Springs Day Trip

So you’re planning a day trip to Palm Springs. Now, where do you even begin?

Make A Stop In La Quinta

For my day trip to Palm Springs, we drove up from San Diego. While Old Town La Quinta isn’t part of Palm Springs, it’s a cute spot to see that’s conveniently on the way. Situated between Indian Wells and Indio, at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains in the Coachella Valley, it’s a great spot to kick off your day trip. Stop here first thing, grab a coffee and enjoy a leisurely stroll. Honestly, after sitting in the car for hours, your body will thank you.

Grab Some Brunch

After your little “pick me up” head over to The Sands Hotel in Palm Springs for some brunch. Their restaurant, the Pink Cabana, has received world-renowned accolades and offers Mediterranean cuisine with Moroccan influence. Be sure to stop by their pool afterwards. It’s a dreamy spot. The restaurant only accepts reservations, so be sure to plan in advance.

Shop & Lunch

Drive down the iconic El Paseo, known as the “Rodeo Drive” of the desert. Walk around the Gardens on El Paseo for some premier shopping. It’s an open-air mall with luxury stores. When you’re ready to drop, head over to Armando’s across the street for a late lunch. They serve delectable Mexican dishes and some killer margs. It’s a local favorite.

Take In the Sights

If you love design and architecture, explore the Uptown Design District. The area is filled with unique shops, vintage buildings, and boutiques. Go to Indian Canyons for gorgeous mid-century modern homes and fun hiking trails, and see famous monuments like the Forever Marilyn statue, inspired by a scene from Billy Wilder's 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, now located in Downtown Park.

Dinner at Melvyn's

Melvyn’s Restaurant, one of the only remaining Rat Pack hangouts in Palm Springs, is a must-stop for dinner. Just know, a reasonable dress code is enforced; luckily, ViX resort wear has perfect options for you. Another honorable mention: Bar Cecil

The Purple Room

If you love live performances and entertainment, The Purple Room is an old school supper club with intimate music and comedy. Enjoy a nightcap at the High Bar at the Rowan.

Staying in Palm Springs for a few more days?

Because Palm Springs is such a popular getaway destination, it comes as no surprise that the city offers plenty of luxury hotels and resorts. Locals rave about the Colony Palms. I thought the Sands Hotel & Spa was really cute and quaint. I also heard L’Horizon Palm Springs and Korakia are unique places to stay. And if you’re after the quintessential Palm Springs experience, you’ve likely heard of The Saguara Hotel, known for its vibrant, rainbow-colored façade.

Clearly, Palm Springs isn’t just a vacation hotspot – it’s an experience. This desert jewel has it all. Would you spend a day in Palm Springs? Follow us on Instagram and show us your ViX style on your next getaway.
