Brazilian Carnaval: The Greatest Show on Earth

The history of Carnaval in Brazil is a multicultural blend of music, dance, and vibrant energy, making it one of the most iconic celebrations in the world. This unique phenomenon happens every February, in the height of summer.

One of the most awaited attractions is the two-day parade where the main samba schools compete for the title of Carnaval Champion. The Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro becomes a grand stage where each school showcases an electrifying performance: with vivid choreography, costumes and floats, each year with a different theme and story-telling.

Every school comes from a different region in the city. The preparation phase cultivates a spirit of togetherness in each community, as they actively engage in both the actual parade and the intricate behind-the-scenes processes involving the development of themes, concepts, songs, and all technical aspects. In the lead-up, they host open rehearsals and special gatherings, extending invitations to the entire community and external supporters. Some schools have a heritage spanning over a century, aligning with the surge in samba’s popularity in Rio during the 1920s.

The Greatest Show on Earth

The Greatest Show on Earth

Dubbed “the greatest show on earth,” the spectacle is a sensory feast, a celebration of culture and creativity that engages both participants and spectators alike. Immersed in diligent craftsmanship that spans an entire year, the costumes for the parade bear witness to a profound dedication to detail. Meticulously sewn and adorned by skilled artisans in the ateliers of the schools, each outfit becomes a labor of love and talent. Every thread woven; every gem carefully placed by hand… they are not mere garments but pieces of wearable art.
